Throughout her life she has been an active grassroots volunteer in politics, the environment and labor movements. Since obtaining a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1988, with a dissertation topic on observations and modeling of the deep equatorial Pacific circulation, Rui Ponte has been involved in a variety of oceanic and atmospheric studies involving modeling and data analysis, and focusing on problems related to sea level variability, the ocean circulation, and the variable Earth rotation and gravity field. He is currently a staff scientist at Atmospheric Environmental Research, Inc. in Cambridge, MA, since 1989, and an active member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, and The Oceanography Society.

R. Timothy Sieber is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, USA. He received his Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from New York University, with a specialization in Urban Anthropology. Tim has done research in Boston and New York City, USA, as well as in Caracas, Venezuela and Lisbon, Portugal. His research projects, publications, and consulting have centered on a variety of urban policy issues, including education, child welfare, gentrification, community and urban development, environmental problems, and waterfront planning. He has recently begun a new project on planning and urban development in Lisbon, especially in the city's waterfront zone. He is also currently Project Director of the Ford Foundation Diversity Research Initiative at the University of Massachusetts, Co-President of the Society for the Anthropology of North America, a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, and active in many other professional organizations, including the American Anthropological Association and the Society for the Anthropology of Europe.
