CITIDEP General Plan of Activities

Took place in Lisbon, 27 March 2008, the I International e-Planning Colloquium, at the ISCSP Auditorium , Polo da Ajuda (Universidade Ténica de Lisboa), with researchers from MIT-USA, DIT-Ireland and 5 Universities from Portugal. CITIDEP, who is a member of this "Consortium" e-Planning, is supporting the development of the "e-Planning"Tech Labs Network [e-Planning web site] [e-Planning Colloquium]
EuroLifeNet: Took place in Lisbon, on the 1 and 2 June 2007, the II Internacional EuroLifeNet Meeting, at the Auditorium of the Escola Secundária Luis de Camões. By 14.00 PM on 1 June, in this Meeting, took place a press conference to present the results in Portugal of the measures on personal exposure to Particulate Matter (PM2.5) during November 2006, implemented by more than 600 young students in Portugal and Italy.
Took take place on the 8th May 2007 in Milan, a press conference to present the Italian results from the EuroLifeNet November 2006 campaign.
EuroLifeNet was featured on RTP2 as well on RTP Noticias (Portugal TV), on the 10,13 and 14 January 2007, 15.20 PM. The TV program included a brief interview with EuroLifeNet Director, Pedro Ferraz de Abreu. [press release]
Invited by the Portuguese UNESCO National Commission, the President of CITIDEP, Prof. Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, presented the EuroLifeNet - Environment-Health-Citizenship-Education Program at the UNESCO International Conference, 14 December 2006.
EuroLifeNet first measure season for PM 2.5 (Particulate Matter) was completed successfully, in Portugal and Italy. Participated 665 students at elementary and highschool level, 51 teachers, 11 researchers and 5 experts in both countries. The second season was completed in April 2007, in Portugal.
The Secretary of State for Education and the Secretary of State for Environment, Portugal, stated their support to the EuroLifeNet Program initiative led by CITIDEP.
Invited by the Institute of Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre (IES-JRC) of the European Commission, CITIDEP presented at the APHEIS meeting on 26 May 2005, Ispra, Italy, the work done with project PEOPLE-Citizenship and a proposal for a new European Union program on Environment-Health-Education-Citizenship, the EuroLifeNet. ICPPIT03: A book is being prepared by the Task Force (Profs. Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, Joseph Ferreira Jr., Joanaz de Melo) for the International Conference on Public Participation and Information Technologies, that took place 10-12 November 2003, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, co-organized by MIT and CITIDEP. Joan Blades, the founder of "MoveOn.org", adressed ICPPIT03, together with Jane Fountain, head of the Harvard's Digital Government program, moderated by Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, CITIDEP's President. More than 100 researchers from 15 countries participated. The 1999 Edition was co-organized by CITIDEP and the New University of Lisbon (DCEA-FCT-UNL), and had the President of Republic and the Minister of Science and Technology of Portugal delivering the keynote addresses. The (then) USA Vice-President, Albert Gore, sent a message to the 1999 Conference.
Project PEOPLE: Results from benzene pollution measurements in Europe were recently published by the IES/JRC (September 2005). CITIDEP is one of the co-authors of the PEOPLE final report.
Sabor/Coa: A new research/intervention project is in motion, "WCD / IMS - Sabor/Coa rivers case". The goal is to apply the methodology from both the "World Commission on Dams" and the "Intelligent Multimedia System Project" (CITIDEP), in support to the decision-making process concerning the proposed construction of dams on the Sabor and/or Coa rivers, in Portugal. Guideline for Highschool curriculum reform: By decision of the Secretary of State for Education Administration, now followed-up with the support of the Highschools Department of the Ministry of Education of Portugal, it was appointed our colleague Isabel Medina in representation of CITIDEP for a joint task force CITIDEP/DES, with the mission to support the modernization of highschool curricula in the area of citizenship and information technologies. CITIDEP produced already a Guideline to use the "Public Participation and Information Technologies 1999" Book (described next item), for that effect.
PPIT Book in distribution: The Book "Public Participation and Information Technologies 1999", resulting from ICPPIT99 International Conference, is available for on-line orders. The book includes a multimedia CD-ROM with 3 hours of video from the Conference. Besides ICPPIT99 Co-Chairs, (João Joanaz de Melo e Pedro Ferraz de Abreu), presented the book Prof. Sousa Lobo, President of the New University of Lisbon (UNL), and Prof. Mel King, MIT Emeritus and CITIDEP Science Council member.
BNT Proceedings published: The Proceedings from the International Colloquium "Public Libraries and New technologies: How to fight info-poor exclusion?", co-organized by the Municipality of Lisboa and CITIDEP (ed. CML-Cultura), are available.
