e-Planning: Took place in Lisbon, 27 March 2008, the I International e-Planning Colloquium, at the ISCSP Auditorium , Polo da Ajuda (Universidade Ténica de Lisboa), with researchers from MIT-USA, DIT-Ireland and 5 Universities from Portugal. CITIDEP, who is a member of this "Consortium" e-Planning, is supporting the development of the "e-Planning"Tech Labs Network [e-Planning web site] [e-Planning Colloquium]

EuroLifeNet: Took place in Lisbon, on the 1 and 2 June 2007, the II Internacional EuroLifeNet Meeting, at the Auditorium of the Escola Secundária Luis de Camões. By 14.00 PM on 1 June, in this Meeting, took place a press conference to present the results in Portugal of the measures on personal exposure to Particulate Matter (PM2.5) during November 2006, implemented by more than 600 young students in Portugal and Italy.

Took take place on the 8th May 2007 in Milan, a press conference to present the Italian results from the EuroLifeNet November 2006 campaign.

EuroLifeNet was featured on RTP2 as well on RTP Noticias (Portugal TV), on the 10,13 and 14 January 2007, 15.20 PM. The TV program included a brief interview with EuroLifeNet Director, Pedro Ferraz de Abreu. [press release]

Invited by the Portuguese UNESCO National Commission, the President of CITIDEP, Prof. Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, presented the EuroLifeNet - Environment-Health-Citizenship-Education Program at the UNESCO International Conference, 14 December 2006. EuroLifeNet first measure season for PM 2.5 (Particulate Matter) was completed successfully, in Portugal and Italy. Participated 665 students at elementary and highschool level, 51 teachers, 11 researchers and 5 experts in both countries. The second season was completed in April 2007, in Portugal.

The Secretary of State for Education and the Secretary of State for Environment, Portugal, stated their support to the EuroLifeNet Program initiative led by CITIDEP.

Invited by the Institute of Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre (IES-JRC) of the European Commission, CITIDEP presented at the APHEIS meeting on 26 May 2005, Ispra, Italy, the work done with project PEOPLE-Citizenship and a proposal for a new European Union program on Environment-Health-Education-Citizenship, the EuroLifeNet. ICPPIT03: A book is being prepared by the Task Force (Profs. Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, Joseph Ferreira Jr., Joanaz de Melo) for the International Conference on Public Participation and Information Technologies, that took place 10-12 November 2003, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, co-organized by MIT and CITIDEP. Joan Blades, the founder of "MoveOn.org", adressed ICPPIT03, together with Jane Fountain, head of the Harvard's Digital Government program, moderated by Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, CITIDEP's President. More than 100 researchers from 15 countries participated. The 1999 Edition was co-organized by CITIDEP and the New University of Lisbon (DCEA-FCT-UNL), and had the President of Republic and the Minister of Science and Technology of Portugal delivering the keynote addresses. The (then) USA Vice-President, Albert Gore, sent a message to the 1999 Conference.

Project PEOPLE: Results from benzene pollution measurements in Europe were recently published by the IES/JRC (September 2005). CITIDEP is one of the co-authors of the PEOPLE final report.

Citizens are helping to evaluate air pollution. Promoted by the European Commission, the project PEOPLE - "Population Exposure to Air Pollutants in Europe" invited citizens to participate directly in the evaluation of personal levels of exposure to air pollutants such as benzene, at several European cities. Lisbon and Brussells were the first (Lisbon results were presented at a press conference 17 July 2003). CITIDEP is one of the 7 partners of PEOPLE, and organized complementing activities as part of its "Citizenship and New Technologies" Program, including sessions with hundreds of students and teachers in Lisbon and Viana do Castelo (Portugal), linked through videoconference, and with a network of students and teachers following it through live Internet video broadcast. Sabor/Coa: A new research/intervention project is in motion, "WCD / IMS - Sabor/Coa rivers case". The goal is to apply the methodology from both the "World Commission on Dams" and the "Intelligent Multimedia System Project" (CITIDEP), in support to the decision-making process concerning the proposed construction of dams on the Sabor and/or Coa rivers, in Portugal. Guideline for Highschool curriculum reform: By decision of the Secretary of State for Education Administration, now followed-up with the support of the Highschools Department of the Ministry of Education of Portugal, it was appointed our colleague Isabel Medina in representation of CITIDEP for a joint task force CITIDEP/DES, with the mission to support the modernization of highschool curricula in the area of citizenship and information technologies. CITIDEP produced already a Guideline to use the "Public Participation and Information Technologies 1999" Book (described next item), for that effect.

PPIT Book in distribution: The Book "Public Participation and Information Technologies 1999", resulting from ICPPIT99 International Conference, is available for on-line orders. The book includes a multimedia CD-ROM with 3 hours of video from the Conference. Besides ICPPIT99 Co-Chairs, (João Joanaz de Melo e Pedro Ferraz de Abreu), presented the book Prof. Sousa Lobo, President of the New University of Lisbon (UNL), and Prof. Mel King, MIT Emeritus and CITIDEP Science Council member.

BNT Proceedings published: The Proceedings from the International Colloquium "Public Libraries and New technologies: How to fight info-poor exclusion?", co-organized by the Municipality of Lisboa and CITIDEP (ed. CML-Cultura), are available.

Citizenship Kit: a new CITIDEP project is taking shape (portuguese text), as part of its Citizenship and IT Program.

Position Papers: CITIDEP is debating a "Position Paper" on Education, Democracy and New Information Technologies, through an invited presentation by Pedro Ferraz de Abreu at the II International Meeting of Portuguese Researchers, already published in a book, "Alguns Desafios da Educação em Portugal na Era da Internet e da Democracia Participativa".

LARN: CITIDEP supports the Luso-American Research Network (LARN) and its initiatives.

FIIP: CITIDEP "Web team" provided technical support to the International Forum of Portuguese Researchers (FIIP) and its elected Board.

September 2005	Ozone awareness in shools: On the occasion of the World Day for the Ozone Layer, 16 September 2005, CITIDEP, GAIA and YEE (Youth and Environment Europe) launched an initiative to raise awareness of students of elementary and secondary schools. In Portugal, a CITIDEP and GAIA team distributed posters, flyers and T-shirts provided by YEE, to the High Schools of Pedro Nunes and Jeronimo Emiliano de Andrade. [posters download from YEE]
May 2005	Colloquium at the Order of Engineers: Took place the 23 May 2005 ,17 to 20.30 PM, at the auditorium of the "Ordem dos Engenheiros" in Lisbon, the Colloquium "Public Consultation in Environmental Impact Assessment - how the technological jump challenges an institutional jump", presided by the Secretary of State for Environment, Prof. Humberto Rosa. The intervention of the guest speaker, Prof. Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, was based on research done in Portugal and in the USA, supported among other entities by the Ministry of Environment of Portugal. It included an analysis on the special character of the current technological revolution, the use of a prototype of a intelligent multimedia system in support of public consultation in EIA on the incineration of solid urban waste, and the evaluation of the institutional impact of introducing this new ICT. Pedro Ferraz de Abreu is a PhD in "Urban and Regional Planning" from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Master of Sciences by the same Institute in "Intelligent Graphic Interfaces" and "Licenciado" by the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in Computer Engineering. January 2005	Tertulia on Education and International Cooperation: Took place this 29 January 2005 a "tertulia" with 20 CITIDEP members and guests, with the theme Education and International Cooperation - what society are creating, which new wold order are we building". Internacional CITIDEP meeting via Internet: Using a videoconference software multi-plataform via Internet, CITIDEP members met (21 and 26 January 2005) connecting Lyubliana (Slovenia), Paris (France, Boston (USA), Lisboa (Portugal) e Tijuana (Mexico).
December 2004	Curso livre in Viana do Castelo: CITIDEP colaborated in the Module 1 of the IV Curso Livre on Cultures of Development and Citizenship - Development and Globalization: Clues for Understanding, organized by Gabinete de Estudos para a Educação e Desenvolvimento da Escola Superior de Educação de Viana do Castelo (GEED-ESE-IPVC), 10 and 11 December 2004. November 2004	"Outfoxed" and the Media at Tertulia: Took place the 14 November 2004 an informal dinner-debate ("tertulia") with 19 CITIDEP members and interested friends to watch the "Outfoxed" documentary and discuss the strategies to control the Media and corresponding (ab)use of the new information and communication technologies [trailer]
June 2004	PEOPLE-Citizenship: Following an invitation from the Joint Research Centre (JRC-European Union), it was presented in Milan the 2004 report of this CITIDEP Project, complementing PEOPLE Project. This report will be published soon by JRC.
November 2003	ICPPIT03: Took place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, the International Conference on Public Participation and Information Technologies, 10-12 November 2003, co-organized by MIT and CITIDEP. March 2003	"Broadcast" via Internet: The 18 March 2003 took place a session with students from elementary schools, in videoconference between Lisboa and Viana do Castelo, dedicated to the air pollution theme, as part of the PEOPLE-Citizenship project. The session was also broadcasted via Internet by uARTE, with many other schools participating via "chat" (IRC).
Setember 2002	Programa Cidadania: Took place another "tertulia" among 18 CITIDEP members and interested friends , to discuss project proposals within the Program "Citizenship and New Technologies ", and debate some substantive questions of this theme [portuguese texts]
Julho 2002	CITIDEP meeting in Viana do Castelo: CITIDEP organized the 22 July of 2002 a Meeting in Viana do Castelo, to present the objectives and activities of this Center to interested colleagues and explore possible avenues of cooperation with the Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Viana de Castelo.
January 2002	"Tertulia": Keeping alive an old portuguese tradition, several members from CITIDEP Portugal and friends promoted an informal dinner-colloquium ("tertulia") in Lisbon, the 12 January 2002, followed by an Internet-based debate on a "Tertulia Journal". 27 persons participated. The guests of honor this time were Korinna Horta, Economist and Political Ecology PhD, and Luisa Nogueira, Environmental Engineer, leading a conversation on the topic of the global climate negotiations (Kyoto treaty) and also concerning the current efforts on monitoring Lisbon's air quality and informing the public in real-time.
September 2001	CITIDEP 5th Anniversary: CITIDEP celebrated its 5th anniversary the 14 September 2001, with a dinner and birthday cake at its headquarters, in Portugal. At this occasion, it was granted to CITIDEP founding member Fernando Manuel Ferrão Castel-Branco Sacramento the 5th Year Commendation, in appreciation of his dedication and vital contributions to CITIDEP.
August 2001	Research Meeting in Mexico: CITIDEP Mexico, together with Colegio Mexiquense and the "Programa Interdisciplinario de Estudios del Tercer Sector" (PIETS), organized the Primer Encuentro de Investigadores on "Las Nuevas Tecnologías y su relación con la Sociedad Civil", 30 August 2001, at El Colegio Mexiquense. May 2001	Lecture Broadcast on Citizenship and Internet: This past16 May 2001 took place a video-broadcast via Internet of a Session on "uARTE", the agency from the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology in charge of connecting schools to Internet. "uARTE" invited our colleague Pedro Ferraz de Abreu to give this lecture and CITIDEP to moderate the "chat" via IRC, during the session. Two Highschools were special participants: "Pedro Nunes", with students in the studio, and "Montejunto", with a videoconference link. March 2001	CITIDEP Mexico organized an "Analysis Forum" on "Democracia Participativa y nuevas tecnologías de información en un mundo globalizado", included in the Programa of the VI Encuentro de la ANECPAP - Asociacion Nacional de Estudiantes de Ciencia Politica y Administracion Publica - Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico, 2 de Marzo 2001. Invited by ANECPAP and the University of Guanajuato, presented communications Alejandra Sota, Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, Prudencio Mochi, Alejandro Natal and Luis Miguel Rionda. February 2001	Internet in Schools: Took place the 15th e 16th February 2001, the "Internet in Schools" Meeting, organized by the Municipality of Odivelas (chaired by our colleague Filomena Henriques), targeting professors of "1o Cycle" and "Child Gardens" (ages 5 to 13). CITIDEP accepted the invitation to present communications on the theme "The Information and Communication Technologies as a Resource to Teach Citizenship", with Pedro Ferraz de Abreu, based on the paper "Alguns Desafios da Educação em Portugal na Era da Internet e da Democracia Participativa" and presenting the "Citizenship Kit " Project, and Catherine Michel presenting "Escrita Interactiva: A Aprendizagem da Democracia pela Pratica" (french text, portuguese summary). October 2000	Took place in Lisbon from 11 to 13 October 2000, at the "Fórum Lisboa", the Colloquium "Public Libraries and New Technologies: How to fight info-poor exclusion?". This Colloquium, with more than 350 registered participants, was jointly organized by CITIDEP and the Cultural Department of the Municipality of Lisbon. Several international guest speakers intervened, including a videoconference with the University of Massachusetts, Boston, USA. [program] [details].
October 1999	Took place in Lisbon, 20-22 October 1999, the International Conference on Public Participation and Information Technologies (ICPPIT99). Co-organized by CITIDEP and the Environmental Dept. of the New University of Lisbon (DCEA-FCT-UNL), with the President of Republic and the Minister of Science and Technology of Portugal delivering the keynote addresses. The (then) USA Vice-President, Albert Gore, sent a message to the Conference. A"ICPPIT Task Force" was created with the mission of divulging its Proceedings and prepare the next edition of the Conference. Internacional Colloquium "Citizenship and New technologies", October 4, 1999, organized by Museum of Republic (Lisbon Municipality), the Atalaia magazine and CITIDEP. Two CITIDEP members, Pedro Ferraz de Abreu and Pedro Andrade, were among the guest speakers. September 1999	Air Quality on the Web: Based on the Air Quality Stations Network of DRA-LVT (regional administration of the Environmental Ministry for Lisbon and Tagus Valley), you can find data on air quality for Lisbon, Barreiro and Seixal, at the web site implemented by our colleague Pedro Borges (CITIDEP-Portugal, web team). This site, as well as a new one in progress, includes information on pollutants and on portuguese and european legislation.

July 1998	Talk at the Museum of the Republica (cmlresistencia@mail.telepac.pt), Lisbon, 2 July 98: Invited by the Director of the Museum, Dr. João Mario de Mascarenhas, CITIDEP President Pedro Ferraz de Abreu lectured on "The new information technologies and the challenges of participatory democracy". A live debate followed, as well as a music performance of a wind quintet. José Portela, member of the CITIDEP Science Council, was elected (July 98) to the Executive Board of the Higher Education School, at the Instituto Superior Politécnico de Viana de Castelo. Revised "Luso-American Research Network" (LARN) proposal, supported by CITIDEP (July 98) Prof. Bish Sanyal and Prof. Joseph Ferreira, from MIT (DUSP - Urban Studies and Planning Dept), visited Portugal (respectively at July 98 and September 98) and had several meetings (Planning Ministry, Lisbon Mayor, Aveiro University) promoted by LARN and CITIDEP, with view to prepare future cooperation protocols between the Planning Dept at MIT and these portuguese entities
